Recently, with the delivery of four 52-m-long, 400-ton main crane beams for general assembly to the BEST construction site, the project's general assembly phase has officially begun. The launch ceremony was held on May 1, 2025, at the CRAFT campus, two months ahead of the schedule. The event was hosted by Fusion Energy Tech, with the presence of Chairman Yan Jianwen, General Manager Huang Suzhen, and other relevant leaders.
General assembly is one of the most critical stages in the construction of the BEST facility, involving the precise installation of the fusion reactor's "heart" components—including the superconducting magnet system, magnet feeder system, Cryostat, thermal shield, blanket, and divertor—into the pit. On-site assembly involves tens of thousands of components with a total weight of 6,000 tons, requiring high precision and strict standards. Currently, work on the Cryostat, the first major component to be positioned, is progressing smoothly, while preparatory work for the remaining six project segments is advancing in an orderly manner.
Since its launch, the BEST project has seen full-scale construction of both the main project and campus facilities. Multiple milestones have been achieved in areas such as facility design optimization, core technology breakthroughs, key component development, and campus engineering, ensuring the successful initiation of the general assembly phase. The smooth launch of the general assembly reflects the collaborative efficiency of all parties under the new system for mobilizing resources nationwide, laying a solid foundation for technological verification and enhanced integration capabilities of the project. Moving forward, continued efforts will be made to leverage advantages in resource allocation, develop innovative mechanisms and systems, and advance the integration of basic fusion research, engineering design, project construction, and industrial planning. This will contribute to establishing a leading position in fusion energy, and accelerate the development and application of nuclear fusion energy.
